GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)-There are nearly 20-thousand people over the age of 65 in Pitt County. While most people look forward to the holiday season, a lot of elderly citizens spend that special time alone.
Out of all the older adults who live outside nursing homes, a third live alone, and 81-year-old Leland Kimball is one of those people.
“When you are alone you get bad attitudes, you don’t do anything, you sit down, you cry sometimes, and it’s not a good feeling,” Kimball said.
Kimball wanted to change his outlook. He says being able to visit the Council on Aging is the best thing he’s been able to do in a very long time.
Kimball says, “I enjoy life better now than I did.”
Two years ago Kimball discovered the Pitt County Council on Aging. A couple times a week he gets out of the house, socializes, and on this particular day takes home some gifts.
Council on Aging director Rich Zeck says it’s important for people to remember older citizens during this time of the year.
“Be aware of older adults, invite somebody over,” Zeck said.
