Editorial: Hungry seniors in need

Area food banks and nonprofit agencies that work to feed growing numbers of eastern North Carolina residents without adequate means for basic nutrition do a terrific job with limited resources. Schools in Pitt County provide nutritious meals for needy children year-round. Churches and other groups help fill in the gaps for various meal programs.

One large gap in need of filling is among indigent senior citizens unable to leave their homes. The food requirements for more than half of Pitt County residents applying for assistance in that category are not being met.

The Meals on Wheels program administered by the Pitt County Council on Aging works hard at stretching its budget and staff of volunteers to feed hungry seniors in Pitt County. Despite that hard work, hundreds of seniors who need the meals provided by the program cannot receive them.
